If you want to know why a group puts forth a particular agenda, the first question you ask is "Who's financing it?"

In ALEC's case, they are funded by prescription drug companies, big business health groups, HMO's, insurance companies  . . . and big tobacco.  When profits trump pain reduction, one has to wonder how ALEC laws could be called "model". 

Just some of the ALEC contributors include Pfizer, Pharmacia & Upjohn, Pharmaceutical Research & Manufacturers of America, Bayer Corporation, Baxter Healthcare Corporation, Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Wausau Insurance Companies and Zurich Insurance . . . and Philip Morris Corporation, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and the Tobacco Institute.
