Charter Schools Act

This ALEC legislation allows anybody to seek charters from the state to create and operate private profit-based schools.  These schools would be exempt from the state laws, standards and regulations that apply to public schools, although they would be funded on a per-pupil rate with public funds.

These charter schools would have the option of turning students -- including special education or problem children -- away from enrollment, yet may be able to claim higher performance standards after siphoning off the brightest students.

In short, under this law, Charles Manson could start the Helter Skelter Charter School with our tax dollars.  This is a low road we don't want to take while spending our tax dollars.
