Family Leave Strategy Section

California is the first state in the nation to provide comprehensive paid family leave. The new law, which goes into effect in 2004, will give most working Californians up to six weeks of partial pay if they need time off to care for a new child or seriously ill family member.

How did California come to take this historic step? And how did the landmark legislation go from introduction to signature in less than one year?

To find out how  they won the fight for paid family leave, just click here to see the case analysis put together by The Labor Project for Working Families, a nonprofit advocacy and education organization working with the labor movement and the community to improve work and family policies.
