Affordable HousingMiddle and lower income families are spending increasingly large percentages of their incomes on renting and buying homes. There is a growing disconnect between where jobs are located within metro areas and where affordable housing is located, forcing workers to endure longer commutes between homes and places of work. Lack of affordable housing has far-reaching impacts on the diversity of our neighborhoods to the quality of our public schools. The Bush Administration will likely reduce the effectiveness of national programs designed to aid homeowners and renters. This means it is all the more important for state and local governments to address the housing crisis themselves. ALICE hopes to offer compelling reasons why housing is such an important issue and propose sample legislation that could help to solve this problem, such as inclusionary zoning ordinances and strengthen Section 8 voucher entitlements. The following package compiles the best information on the housing crisis and potential solutions. The materials in this package come in large part from the Center for Policy Alternatives, The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, the National Low Income Housing Institute, The Innovative Housing Institute, and The Brookings Institution's Center on Urban and Metropolitan Policy. The Service Center would like to thank these groups for mapping out the high road on easing the housing crisis. |
