Renewable Portfolio Standards Renewable energy legislation is catching wind across the country. The number of states with Renewables Portfolio Standards (RPS) has nearly doubled in the last three years, from 7 to 13. “Renewables” describes the energy generated by wind, sun, water, plant growth, and geothermic heat that is then converted into power for our everyday use. As the term suggests, this energy is generated from sources we can tap into again and again, protecting our precious environment.
Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) ensure that a minimum amount of renewable energy is included in the portfolio of the electricity resources serving a state. By increasing the required amount of renewables over time, RPS can put the power industry on the high road toward increased sustainability. There are many groups leading the way on the high road to enacting RPS, and we encourage you to check out their work. This policy package is based largely on materials from SERC, REPP, the Union of Concerned Scientists and several other organizations. Please contact these groups with any questions you may have about implementing RPS in your state. |
