Voters Support Affordable Housing As the Administration pushes additional tax cuts to revive the economy, a majority (52%) of likely voters says spending more money to make sure low income people have housing they can afford to rent is more important than Congress cutting more taxes. In addition, 61% say that Congress spending more money to make sure low income people have housing they can afford to rent is good for the economy. In what may become an issue in Congressional races across the country this fall, most Americans (62%) say there is a shortage of housing that low income people in their communities can afford to rent. By a 2-1 margin (66% to 33%), they agree that Congress needs to act to solve the problem. Most (59%) say their elected representatives know there is a shortage of affordable housing in their districts. “Americans are clear: We have an affordable housing crisis, and Congress needs to act,” said Sheila Crowley, President of the National Low Income Housing Coalition, which commissioned the bi-partisan poll conducted by Public Opinion Strategies and Laszlo & Associates.
